Description

London Transport Poster by CRW Nevinson (Ed 75/1000).

Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson (13 August 1889 - October 1946)

Nevinson is one of England's most famous War Artists and was the son of journalist and war correspondent Henry Nevinson and suffrage campaigner and writer Margaret Nevinson. He was educated at Uppingham School before going on to study at the St John's Wood School of Art.

Inspired by the works of Augustus John, he decided to attend the Slade School of Art, part of University College London. His contemporaries at Slade included Mark Gertler, Stanley Spencer, Paul Nash and Dora Carrington. Gertler was, for a time, his closest friend and influence and together they formed a short-lived group, "The Neo-Primitives" based on their mutual admiration for the Art of the early Renaissance. This friendship was not to last however, as they both fell in love with Carrington.
